The European project Fish & Cheap, sponsored by the National Park of Asinara and the Marine Protected Area “Asinara Island” under the European Fishing Fund 2007-2013, aims to promote a culture of sustainability in the consumption of fish resources.

In this sense it proposes the consumption based on locally caught and seasonal fish and little commercially exploited species – the so-called poor fish – is seen as a real opportunity to reduce some species to over-fishing and to keep the local economy alive.
As part of the recovery of fish stocks, a management based on the establishment and strengthening of marine protected areas appears to be a viable option in order to guarantee future generations a healthy environment, rich in biodiversity and fish.
The project also aims to promote forms of fishing with low environmental impact such as fishing tourism.

Fishing Fish & Cheapspecies  means
using abundant fish resources which is a possible source of income for local fishermen.
Distributing Fish & Cheap species means
keeping  the local economy alive and lowering the amount of species subject to over-fishing.
Cooking Fish & Cheap species means
encouraging sustainable consumption of fish diversifying the offer for responsible consumption.
Eating Fish & Cheapspecies  means
buying a cheap product which comes from a local and definite source which defends biodiversity at the table.

Fish & Cheap is financed with European funds (FEP), national and regional authorities and co-financed by the Park Authority.

Local fishermen helped us to identify a selection of 14 species that we can choose in order to consume responsibly.
In the section devoted to the Fish & Cheap species you can see the cards that we have prepared for each species. You’ll find recipes, information on their biology, their nutritional characteristics and other information.
With a little ‘curiosity’ you can find out what other species are recommended in the rest of the Mediterranean and find new opportunities to defend biodiversity in our seas.
